Your customers can tell ChatGPT wrote that.

AI can be a terrific writing tool. But when you blindly copy what it quickly spits out, paste it into your marketing project and call it done, there are tells. Your customers deserve better.

AI Writing Has a Certain Sound

I use ChatGPT, so I recognize it.

One of my favorites to hate is starting a sentence with “At company name, blah blah blah…” People don’t talk that way. Great copy shouldn’t sound like a canned intro from somebody who doesn’t work at your company.

Then there are the dashes. So many dashes. Might as well say, “Hello – ChatGPT wrote this.” Be normal, use a comma.

AI also loves groups of three. Everything seems to be “smart, strategic and effective” or “simple, seamless and successful.” Once you notice the pattern of threes, you can’t unsee it.

Lots of Words. Nothing Special.

The bigger problem isn’t punctuation. It’s that AI can talk in circles to hit a word count while sounding perfectly polished. It doesn’t really know your business. It only knows the bits you feed it.

Ask it to write without giving it enough good information and it fills in the gaps with generic language that could describe almost anything. It doesn’t know the reason behind a decision, your company’s values, what your customers actually care about or why your company is different.

That’s where the human part matters.

I use AI to help get to the point with fewer words, check my grammar and make my writing more effective. My writing. Not the bot’s writing. Rarely do I take the first review of my copy from ChatGPT and run with it. It needs human finesse.

If your customers can tell ChatGPT wrote it, they’ll wonder what else isn’t genuine about your company.
